I'm not denigrating Apple here, but it's worth considering that for the most part (aside from the A-series chips that they now own enough IP on to consider their designs their own) Apple's sourcing hardware components from the same pool as any other player in the market. In fact the iPod and other portable Apple devices have also typically not been the 'best' sounding audio devices on the market, winning by a combination of pricepoint, marketing, design and integration with iTunes and etc. They're certainly not going to achieve the channel separation and impedance driving ability of a proper headphone amp & DA device. The cost of those chips in volume is rediculously low and their performance specifications are on par with what you'd expect.

That will help someone with running a Mac's volume at lower levels than 100%, but you guys should know that Apple is using the same HD audio chips (Analog Devices, Realtek, Cmedia) as any other computer maker. The person I built the split track for only has his macbook available to play the file. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions.

If I play the mp3 on my windows PC or an mp3 player I get full separation with no click ending up on the audio channel. If I use my audio interface I get full separation. This leads me to believe that somehow the headphone jack output is designed to not give true stereo separation. I've tried this on 2 other macbooks using different apps for playing the mp3 (itunes, quicktime, audacity) all with the same result. If I pan the output left I hear only click out of both channels and conversely if I pan the output right I hear only audio out of both channels. Somehow the headphone jack is summing the output so I hear both click and audio out of both channels. I have a split-track mp3 (click track=left, audio=right) that I'm trying to play via my macbook using the headphone jack for the output. I'm pretty sure this has come up before but I didn't have any luck searching the forums.
